FlyRoute Pilot Spotlight: Haili Schimko
Haili currently works full time as a Police Officer for the Town of Erie. She started the drone program for her department and is excited to continue to build the program and our fleet! In her free time she enjoy playing video games, attending EDM concerts, and just spending time with friends and family. She is thankful for the opportunity FlyRoute has given her to expand her knowledge and skill set in flying these awesome tools.
Q&A:
Your experience working as a USMC Crew Chief on Marine One, and transporting the US President and Vice President is impressive. During your time in the Marines, what skills and experience did you gain that have helped you to become a professional drone pilot?
Haili: I honestly never knew anything about drones while I was in the Marine Corps, but my interest in aviation began in the Marines. I think the biggest thing from my time in the Marine Corps that helped me become a professional drone pilot were some of the 14 Marine Corps leadership traits. Without the discipline instilled in me during my time in service, I don’t know if I would have had the motivation or enthusiasm to become a drone pilot.
In your current role as a Police Officer in the town of Erie and leading their UAS team efforts, can you share a story where drone technology has led to a positive outcome during a call?
Haili: One of the most memorable instances I have flying for the PD so far was on an agency assist (not an Erie call but a call outside of our jurisdiction) where a domestic violence suspect attempted to break into his ex’s house. It was night-time at a farm house, so it was very dark outside and on the property. Thankfully we have a couple Mavic 3Ts in our fleet which have thermal capabilities. I was able to respond after Deputies and other Officers helped set a perimeter. Using the thermal capabilities of the Mavic 3T, I was able to locate a heat signature in a pile of hay on a neighbor’s property. I talked Deputies to the location of the heat signature and it turned out to be the suspect! It was a great feeling to know that because of Erie’s drone program, Deputies were able to safely apprehend a very dangerous suspect without further incident.
As a first year FlyRoute pilot, what has been your biggest lesson learned while capturing aerial film for football games?
Haili: I think as far as football footage, “less is more.” When I filmed my first game I was using the right stick a little bit more than necessary. I’m excited to continue to learn as the season progresses and to make fewer mistakes with each game I film!
